Open source solutions has its advantages and disadvantages for using a portal solution. The main advantage is if your a programmer you can fix their bugs quickly or add new features to their code. The disadvantage is, some of their 3rd party modules may break when you receive an update to their core product or if you made a code change you may lose your changes within their open source code.
